Ezra and Nehemiah are books about renewal and restoration. The city of Jerusalem and Solomon’s temple had been destroyed. The people of Israel had been in exile in Babylon for 70 years. But then the Gentile King Cyrus allowed three key figures to begin the restoration of the people, the temple and the city walls of Jerusalem. Our Savior is TYPIFIED in Zerubbabel, the rebuilder of the temple; Nehemiah, the rebuilder of the wall and Ezra, the restorer of the people. Indeed, Ezra’s primary focus was the altar of their hearts. Isn’t that the very focus of our Savior, Yeshua Jesus?
And they told me, “The remnant who survived the exile are there in the province, in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.” When I heard these words, I sat down and wept. I mourned for days, fasting and praying before the God of heaven. – Nehemiah 1: 3-4.
As He (Jesus) approached Jerusalem and saw the city, He wept over it – Luke 19:41
